I know Wikipedia says "kishi" can be applied to amateurs, but is this really correct? I've never heard such a usage, even with regard to extremely strong "amateurs" who play at a pro level. My understanding was that the word "kishi" existed precisely to delineate amateurs from pros.
I'm aware the term "pro kishi" is used, but this would seem to be used to distinguish pros not from amateurs, but rather from "jun kishi" or "chihou kishi" (teaching semi-pros).
Does anyone know what "jun kishi" actually means? On one web page, "jun kishi" are listed below active pros and retired pros. Apparently, Kobayashi Takayuki, one of the four Kobayashi siblings (also including Kobayashi Chizu, Kobayashi Satoru, and Kobayashi Kenji) has this status.
Perhaps amateurs are aji kishi. :D
Chris Hayashida: In my limited experience, I've only heard gouchi for amateurs. Any time that I used kishi, I've been politely corrected.
