a split knight's move

The W stones are split apart by the B stones.

This shape can be called a split knight's move, split keima, ripped knight's move or ripped keima.

Locally speaking this is very bad for White: the stones white+circle and white+square cannot help each other at all.

The history?

White must have some extremely good reason to allow B3 here. Mostly White should answer B1 at B3, connecting her stones and blocking Black's development. As such the shape is often the result of a ko threat.

Possible dodging

It is conceivable that White might want instead to treat white+circle as a sacrifice, with W2 and W4 here.

Usage

  • The terms are not very common. Often the more general split shape is used or simply split?.
