ON-reading

The ON reading or on'yomi (音読み), also known as the Sino-Japanese reading, is, roughly speaking, a reading derived from the old Chinese pronunciation of a kanji. Because of the evolution of both languages over the centuries, this can be very different from any modern Chinese pronunciation.
