Black tries to make an eye in sente with . Of course, black might ignore and run out into the centre, but in that case white can take the corner.

From here there are three ways to proceed.

variation 1  

Black can capture two stones, but it's only one eye.

variation 2  

Black tries to make an eye in the corner, but it's gote.

variation 3  

But after this , it's back to the main lines of Gokyo Shumyo section 1 problem 52/Solution, although with a different move order. So Black is alive. But it's complicated enough that I may have missed something!

Malcolm: The latest analysis in Gokyo Shumyo section 1 problem 52/Solution says that Black cannot avoid a ko; this seems to apply here too.

pitabread?: Black captures two stones but is left with one eye. It's late for me, please tell me if you see something wrong with this. Goes to show how deep this problem is indeed.

Dieter: When , creates a ko: when descends first, is needed if White cannot win the ko, then lives.

pitabread?: Yes, but ko is good enough for white, considering this is the less ideal variant of the original problem.

pitabread?: White's reply at 7 is the problem, should just peek in before from the bottom. B can capture at 7 but will only have 1 eye.
