Elwyn Ralph Berlekamp, b. September 6, 1940, d. April 9 2019, was a professor at Berkeley, leading figure in the application of combinatorial game theory to Go. Coauthor of Winning Ways and Mathematical Go.
To measure players’ estimates of the precise value of moves, Dr. Berlekamp created environmental go or "Coupon Go", a variant in which players can select a coupon with a known point value rather than playing a move.
