Elwyn Ralph Berlekamp, b. September 6, 1940, d. April 9 2019, was a professor at Berkeley and MSRI and a leading figure in the application of combinatorial game theory to Go. He was a co-author of Winning Ways (with John Conway and Richard Guy) and Mathematical Go (with David Wolfe).

To measure players’ estimates of the precise value of moves, Dr. Berlekamp created environmental go or [ext] "Coupon Go", a variant in which players can select a coupon with a known point value rather than playing a move.
