Driving Tesuji

Setup

Consider this situation. Black is under pressure at the upper side.

Crude moves

The crude atari of B1 and the pushing from behind of B3 is not satisfactory. The marked stone remains in a nice position, attacking the eye shape of Black's group and not suffering any loss of liberties.

B1 is the driving tesuji, giving Black two sente moves at B3 and B5, pushing through the small gap, hurting the marked stone.

Joseki

B1 is a tesuji with a double threat and in fact is the only joseki move in this position.

If White continues with an understandable W2, then the following sequence B3-B7 is the driving tesuji.

Avoiding the driving tesuji

More often than not, White does not like above result and plays something like W2 to avoid the driving tesuji.

This example from Teaching Game 44 / B 91 is similar: White's marked stone is weakened. Black thinks of 1 and 3 as disposable stones now.
