Driving Tesuji
The crude atari of and the pushing from behind of
is not satisfactory. The marked stone remains in a nice position, attacking the eye shape of Black's group and not suffering any loss of liberties.
is the driving tesuji, giving Black two sente moves at
and
, pushing through the small gap, hurting the marked stone.
Driving tesuji in joseki
is a tesuji with a double threat and in fact is the only joseki move in this position (although this seems to be
outdated thinking).
More often than not, White does not like above result and plays something like to avoid the driving tesuji.
Driving tesuji in an overall position
This example from Teaching Game 44 / B 91 is similar: White's marked stone is weakened. Black thinks of 1 and 3 as disposable stones now.
