Charles I don't know how a beginner would cope with this; I couldn't see the point on sight.
Bill: Maybe it is intermediate level. Beginner still has a wide range. The point, I would say, is not to atari the hane stone. (The introductory lesson shows the normal case, when the atari is correct. This is the next step.) It doesn't seem to me to be harder than the average beginner level life and death problem here on SL.
unkx80: (Off topic) I am often criticized for making the beginner exercises too hard for beginner level, mainly because I do not have a good feel of what constitutes "beginner" level. Perhaps some of these problems really belong to kyu exercises?
Bill: Later comment. Is the kosumi, , in the solution, any harder than Dropping back with a diagonal play, which is also a beginner page?
Karl Knechtel: I think so. It "looks like" backing away from a semeai, which is counterintuitive.
