Kyu is a Japanese go term adopted into English, pronounced "cue", and used to denote the rank of weaker amateurs - kyu can be translated as "class" and corresponds to coloured belts in martial arts. Beginners start at around 30-kyu, then progress to 1-kyu (1st class student), the next step above which is 1-dan (shodan, a master of 1st degree). Both the form "n kyu" and "n-th kyu" are heard in English.
