Honibo 1986 title game 3 review with AI

This is the 3rd game in the Honinbo title match of 1986 between Takemiya Masaki (White) and Yamashiro Hiroshi

White's play against the corner is sound.

W16 would be better at A says KataGo and it looks more like Takemiya's usual aggressive style. Now the White group in the lower right will have to take care of itself.

W24 allows Black to play B25 naturally on the right side. KataGo would therefore have played W24 around A. W26 makes central influence towards the top but unsurprisingly KataGo thinks Black is ahead now.

White's corner invasion W30 is uncharacteristic.

White's response to B41 is calm. Takemiya abandons the top left in exchange for strength. At W48 I had expected White to continue on the left side. KataGo thinks both Black and White better go there now. W50 takes advantage of the weakness in the shape and has 48 for backup.

W58 probably tries to fix the shape in sente but Black doesn't respond to W60:

When B61 is the first to go to the lower left, Black takes the lead. B69 and W70 are less important than A says KataGo.

B85 is the main reason why White gradually gets back into the game.

W96 sets up a double threat. Either White will cut at W00 here or pressure at W98. Black chooses to move into WHite's sphere of influence.

Winning path for B95

Instead of B95, A here, B1 looks crude and removes any potential to kill the top left but Black can next move out at B3 and live with B5. This way he keeps the center in check.

Black may have expected more from the attack at B1. W4 is a sharp counter. After W8, A and B are miai.

KataGo thinks B19 is an overplay. White can cut it off without too much penalty. From here onwards White's lead will remain at least 8 points.
