After this diagram:

No resistance

% The following question was asked.

Timm(5k): What if Black captures ? That seems playable for me. Black has some points in the corner (White can't come in), a safe top group, and sente. (White could omit W16 but...) So isn't this playable ?

Black captures

Bob McGuigan: In my opinion this is an inferior result for Black. He has only 10 to 12 points in the corner while he has given White powerful outside thickness worth far more. Furthermore, the Black group on the top is not safe. It has a base but can still be attacked.

By the way, Timm, it might be a good idea to post your questions on the discussion page or on Big Question Mark or Quick Questions where the discussion of the question won't disrupt the original page. The results of your question can always be moved to the main page if desired.

If white isn't more than extra satisfied here, she can compromise with the capture and be well content (retire early?) with a tortoise shell and sente. Perhaps see A Ponnuki Is Worth Thirty Points. Also, your B15 is a serious mistake - cut is the only local continuation.

My advice: Put it on a real go board, maybe scatter some plausible stones elsewhere. Proceed to do something else and every now and then take a look at the board from different angles and contemplate about the other corners to see how much this result affects the whole board. (Caveat: Thickness will feel the more impressive the better you are able to use it.)

Thanks for your answers. I still have trouble evaluating those rather complexe positions, so that greatly helped.

And sorry for modifying the joseki page, I'll be careful next time ;)
