From ex-"strategy of go - introductory"
Robert Jasiek Beginner Study Section and similar pages have misleading titles: They are not for real beginners but for weak or advanced kyu players, i.e. players strong enough to have already a rank.
Efficiency is a concept I learned as a 3 kyu. A beginner should only be told the most fundamental aspect of efficiency.
Dieter: First, I'd like to know whether we are using the same terminology. I see three aspects to the game: technique, tactics and strategy.
Technique is, according to me, how to make one single move in a disputed environment. Tactics is the art of reading and calculating, mostly needed in life and death, capturing races and middle game fighting. Strategy is positional judgment and decision making. I don't know whether you all agree with this usage.
Second, I think that basic strategy, aimed at beginners, should give them the few guidelines that are needed to play on a 9x9. To me, a player who has moved on to 19x19 is already past the stage of beginner. On a 9x9 principles like efficiency and flexibility are less relevant, whereas connection and liberties are extremely important. The only concept that needs to be introduced is territory.
So, I think a beginner needs to focus on connection, life and death, and some of the basic techniques like the hane. The proverbs that relate to these limited subjects are all a beginner needs to know.
