Illluck: Japanese ranks? (2011-12-27 20:26) [#9181]

It seems to me like the current Japanese ranks (JPN 1d = KGS 7-8k = CHN 12k) is way off. The source cited does not seem to be that reliable either. Can someone who know how to revert it back to the version before the Nov 29/30 edits?

you can revive old versions in the page history.

oddly enough the ranks given in the current edition match with some anecdotal evidence. otoh there are many strong japanese players, and I simply can't believe they would accept a rank system which puts them firmly together with people 9 stones weaker than them at 6 dan. what is the point of such a ranking system if it doesn't allow meaningful handicap games?

I've been under the impression that Japanese 1d is roughly KGS 2-3k (e.g. [ext] http://www.lifein19x19.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=4772).

That is why I wrote anecdotal. Maybe it is just a go school giving pupils an exaggerated opinion of their strength, by giving bad estimates of ranks elsewhere in japan.
