Remillard: Small issue with transcribed lesson (2006-01-18 23:01) [#929]

First,... wow. Thanks so much. Please take this comment in the technical way it was meant, and not as any aspersions on the effort.

Secondly, there do seem to be a few problems with the SGF file.

  1. When loading into CGoban2, it gripes about properties that it's throwing away. It doesn't seem to affect the readability, but maybe it couldn't hurt to run it through the SGF checker at Red Bean and see if there's a way to remove those superfluous properties.
  2. When loading into Panda-gGo, it doesn't complain about the properties, there is at least one instance where it is not marking spaces on the board. Whether or not this has to do with the properties above, I don't know.

Hope this helps. It's great to see something capture the fluid explanations that Shygost does so well.

Glad you're finding them useful.

The editor that I am using is not very clever, I'm afraid. I sometimes need to add/remove stones at the same spot for them to appear -- these are the duplicate properties that CGoban complains about. But it shouldn't complain! It is near impossible in CGoban to make the SGFs in the style I've chosen, even though its perfectly legal SGF (apart from the duplicate properties).

24.4.40.197: Files load fine with Drago (2006-01-25 05:54) [#949]

The file loads fine with [ext] Drago. You may want to download this SGF editor.

216.239.73.70: Similar problems. (2006-12-25 07:36) [#2831]

Loading up lesson one, I'm seeing the same errors with cgoban 2 and 3 that Remillard mentioned. In addition, I'm not entirely sure I'm seeing what I'm meant to be seeing. At one point early on, in cgoban2 the board indicates B, D, and D. In cgoban3 it indicates B.B (minus the dot), BD, D, though the points B.B and BD are referred to as B and D, and the point D appears not to be discussed at all. Also, at some points, two stones appear on the board at once. I'm not sure if this is intentional. At another point, the locations C and CD appear. When these points appear, indicating potential moves for white, black's last move disappears off the board. The tutorial continues further along, and black's move doesn't reappear, even though white moves next.

Also, can someone suggest an alternative SGF editor/reader that works under linux?

I'm testing out Drago under wine... The B/D/D error still shows up, but the C/D error is gone now, and the missing black piece is present.

Thanks for the lessons!
