167.127.163.141: What is going on here? (2006-01-10 12:15) [#836]

What is going on? Why are people consistently altering the links and the rank of this man and his wife? Is this some Russian equivalent of the great and much dreaded Italian FIGG-AGI schism that blighted many a thread on rgg?

Short story: Igor Grishin started his own russian go federation. So we have two of them now in Russia: an official one and Grishin's one. The way this separation went caused a lot of hurt feelings on both sides. I wont go into who is right and who is wrong but for one mentioning Grishin as *the* president of *the* go federarion is at least misleading. Grishin have never reached rating mentioned on his personal page in the rating list of official go federation and this why I guess we are seeing people to edit his rank on SL. Same applies to other related pages (his wife, his pupils, etc) I'm not justifying this wiki edit wars but just explaining what causes it. It is rather sad that both sides decided to spoil SL with this conflict.

167.127.163.141: Re: What is going on here? (2006-01-10 14:15) [#839]

Oh dear, I hate these type of conflicts. It's really getting silly now too. As this is a personal homepage the author is entitled to put what he wants on it, so long as it is not defamatory to the Russian Go Federation or to anyone else. Ranks are all relative, and I see no reason to persistently alter it here. There should be no reason for Arno to have to adjudicate on its contents.

Hu: Re: What is going on here? (2006-01-10 14:15) [#840]

Thanks for the information.

Changing information in this kind of way without discussion, such as the anonymous 80.253.14.246 is doing, is not the way to handle such disputes. If a rank is different between two organizations, than state it for both, and explain (if that is part of the issue).

IlyaM: Re: What is going on here? (2006-01-10 15:09) [#842]

Not explaining is certainly the main issue. Personally I don't care about ranks but I'm somewhat annoyed at the deliberate attempt to confuse people about who is the president of Russian Go Federation (RGF). Igor Grishin is not the president of RGF and the links on his pages are not links on official RGF's website. Anyway it is not me who edits this pages so I cannot help to stop it. I guess the best thing to do at the moment is ban IP of the guy who started the edit war.

Shadowjack: Re: What is going on here? (2006-01-12 07:37) [#860]

Igor never stated that he is president of RGF. He is president of organization named "GO Federation" (in russian, of course). This organization is not less "legal" than RGF. I think the best way is to create other page and name it "RGF vs GF" or whatever you want and link it from this page as "different opinion". But be prepared for edits/complains, if that page would contain any slander.

breakfast: ((no subject)) (2006-01-10 14:48) [#841]

The members of the Go Federation (Moscow, Russia) are rarely playing in official rating tournaments of other organizations, so they have no current ratings. They have only dan grades. Igor Grishin has an official 3-dan diploma of Chinese Weichi Association. I will put the copy of it in few minutes.

tderz: blocking IP addresses and usernames (2006-01-10 15:14) [#843]

Dear Breakfast and friends:

Don't worry and use to much time to re-edit so often.

When Arno, Morten, unkx80 return, they could stop easily the childish behavior
I only guess that our admins here are not presently on watch, otherwise these IP addresses could have been blocked easily.

See also [ext] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Revert.

"Revert wars considered harmful (the [ext] Three Revert Rule Wikipedia policy states that you may not revert any article more than three times in the same day. This is a strict limit, not a given right; you should not revert any one article more than three times daily. See Wikipedia:Three revert rule for details on this.

High-frequency reversion wars make the page history less useful, waste space in the database, make it hard for other people to contribute, and flood recent changes and watchlists. Sock puppets may not be used to violate this rule. Please request protection rather than reverting. Violation of this rule may lead to protection of the page on the version preferred by the non-violating party; blocking; or investigation by the Arbitration Committee."

For the anonymous reverters, usually this here holds:
"Explain reverts (on the discussion page)
Being reverted can feel a bit like a slap in the face—"I worked hard on those edits, and someone just rolled it all back". However, sometimes a revert is the best response to a less-than-great edit, so we can't just stop reverting. What's important is to let people know why you reverted. This helps the reverted person because they can remake their edit, but fixing whatever problem it is that you've identified."

Not complying with nettiquette is unnecessary aggressiveness, thereby displaying weakness, namely conveying, arguing one's point of view in a polite (and winning) way.

I stopped it.

Just to clarify: the only admins are MortArno. My status is a librarian. Hu is one too. There are several other librarians as well.

Morten: Pages locked (2006-01-10 15:58) [#846]

Morten: I have locked the relevant pages for editing.

I do not want to block one side of a two-sided dispute, as that does not appear equitable.

I suggest that the relevant parties discuss the contents of the pages on the relevant discussion pages in order to arrive at an agreed content for these pages.

The pages can then be updated and unlocked.

If, subsequent to this unlocking, disruptice edits continue, it will be reasonable to block the relevant user(s).

I have unblocked 80.253.14.246 again. If 80.253.14.246 wants to appear credible, he should identify himself.

SL is not the right place for a public dispute. Please reconsider your dispute and arrive at an equitable solution.

Morten: Pages unlocked, and updated (2006-01-12 11:24) [#861]

Having received some more info, I have slightly modified this page to present what I believe is a fair picture.

I have added two new pages for the Russian Go Federation and the Go Federation (Moscow, Russia).

The relevant pages have been unlocked and can be freely edited again.

I strongly suggest that both 'sides' limit their posting to promoting their own cause, not to denigrating the other's cause.

Disruptive edits of the relevant pages will be treated as vandalism.

Please use discussion pages to discuss if necessary.

If you have any comments on the way librarians/admins have handled this issue, please let us know.

Enjoy :-)
