68.227.132.27: Expected Learning Curve question (2009-12-03 09:02) [#6659]

I started playing Go about 6 weeks ago and from various website and live play I believe I have about an 8kyu rating. Many have told me this is impressive. But I am also obsessed and study about 5 or more hours a day. My goal is to achieve a 1d ranking sometime in my life. How reasonable is this and on what time scale. I don't want to get discouraged because I expect that the learning curve levels out soon. Any thoughts?

If you are obsessed and play 5 hours a day, then anything can happen. If you have reached 8 kyu after six weeks, that is indeed impressive and a dan grade can be expected soon.

Where this can end: only a professional teacher will be able to tell. If you are really that obsessed, take a professional teacher and convert some of the hours you spend on Go these days to working hours to pay him/her off. Catalin Taranu may be a good choice for a teacher, if you are European.

USA player. I don't know how to find a private teacher. I might have to travel. Would one lesson a month be sufficient?
