The shedding of the skin seems to me to be like the strategem seen in movies where besieged heroes prop up dummies to look like people are manning the ramparts while the heroes escape through a tunnel. In go sabaki techniques are designed to defend more than to run away. If they involve shinogi the goal is to maintain a presence in the enemy's region of influence.
