So You Want to Play Go? Level 4
series: So You Want to Play Go?
By: Jonathan Hop
2012
249 pp.

The final instalment of the 'So You Want to Play Go?' series, this e-book is intended for low level dan players looking to improve their game and widen their horizons with respect to Go. By far the most difficult book of the series, the game is presented in Jonathan Hop's usual fun and laid back style. This e-book mirrors Jonathan's training at the Yu Changhyuk Baduk Dojo in South Korea. It was completed in collaboration with Alexander Dinerchtein (3p).

Table of Contents:

  • Chapter 1: Joseki
  • Chapter 2: Positional Judgment
  • Interlude
  • Chapter 3: Game Review
  • Chapter 4: Professional Games

Review of the whole series

Zengarden Jonathan Hop's four book series is an entertaining, challenging and stimulating read. I hover between 8-6 kyu and at first bought volumes 3 and 4, which I found very instructive. However, the way Jonathan Hop presents his material is is very good fun, never patronising and lucidly clear. Perhaps more important is the way the discussions constantly challenges the reader to re-think assumptions about more basic concepts, such as "shape" and "life and death". As a result I also bought the first two, more elementary volumes as a "refresher". I have not regretted it. The whole series of four books makes up, in my view, the best available course from beginner to good club player available in English.
