Pages By Distance

    Keywords: SL description

The following lists rank pages by how well they are linked from other pages.

As calculating shortest paths from and to all pages (O(n^3)) is becoming ever more impossible, the following heuristic is used (HomePages are excluded):

  1. a page is picked at random
  2. repeat three times: a random link is followed to a new page - the new page becomes the current page
    • (This simulates a user following three successive random links starting from a random page.)
  3. The current page gets a point.
  4. Repeat steps 1-3 750.000 times.
  5. results in "Forward" ranking

The same is repeated the other way around, i.e. follow backward references instead of (forward) links in order to get the "Backward" ranking.

Results:

  • the forward ranking calculates how likely it is to visit a certain page, if you click through SL randomly. Essential go terms and concepts rank very high in this rating. WikiOrphans, pages that are not linked, are not included in this list.
  • the backward ranking calculates from which page you have most likely reached your current page. Central index pages rank very good in this rating.

Library work:

Sensei's library has been in existence for many years now. The library has grown to a large number of pages. Besides adding new content to the library, or participating in discussions, there is a lot of work you can do in the maintenance of the library. The work includes:

  • Look at the bottom 250 backward in pages by distance. These are pages containing very few links and hence susceptible of wikification.
  • Look at the bottom 250 forward in pages by distance. These are pages being linked from very few pages. They can probably be linked from more pages or be merged into similar pages which are referenced more often.
  • Add links to relevant pages. The simplest form is the "see also" section at the bottom of the page.

The above is a small part from the library work page the adding links suggestion is best for the bottom 250 backward (Can somebody make links from bottom 250 backward and bottom 250 forward? And could we not add all bottom rankers to the list, (there is no obvious reason to limit it to 250, many of them are by use just single linked, BQM pages for example)
