This is a common situation in handicap games. White has approached the top left hoshi stone and Black has blocked from both sides. White may look heavy but has surprisingly good shape.

Initial setup
[Diagram]
Diagram 1: 1-3

W1: With this move, White makes an eye at 'a' and makes miai of an eye at the top, either to the left or to the right.

W3: White lives.

Variation 1 at move 1 in Diagram 1: 1

W1: White can also run out here. There is still the option of making an eye at the top at 'a'.

[Diagram]
Variation 1.1 (continued): 2-4

B1: Black can prevent White from making an eye at the top, but this can be costly.

W2: White can decide which side he wants to block.

B3: Now White can jump into the corner. Had White blocked on the other side, White could have jumped (or threatened to jump) into the top right. If Black can't capture the White group now, then this exchange is a loss for Black. Therefore, before playing 'a', Black should be sure that the White group cannot escape.

Variation 2 at move 2 in Diagram 1: 1-2

W2: White lives.
