Kyu Exercise 4 / Solution

Solution 1

[Diagram]
Placement on the second line.

The simpler solution would be a placement on the second line. B3 forces W4, and B5 reduces the eye at the bottom to one in sente.

Placement on the second line.

Why sente? Because if White obstinately makes the other eye with W6, Black captures White with B7.

Variation.

If W2 simply captures the two Black stones, then B3 cuts and captures two White stones.

Solution 2

[Diagram]
Placement on the first line.

The placement at the first line also works, but B3 and B5 are probably a blind spot.

[Diagram]
Variation.

If W2 simply captures the two Black stones, Black can simply set up a snapback with B3 and B5.

[Diagram]
Failure.

B3 is incorrect. Although B5 is a ploy to reduce the eye in sente, but W6 answers correctly and lives.

B9 and W10 are miai.

Other variations

Atari.

The atari at 1 is a mistake.

Atari.

Black makes a throw-in at B5, but White occupies the vital point of the bulky five with W6 and lives.
