Gu Shuiru (顾水如 1892-03-03 [1] -- 1971-06-19) was the first Chinese player to study in Japan.
He was made a professional 4 dan there in 1919.
Gu was the top player in China from about 1930 to 1950. Nihon Ki-in 4 dan. Gu took only two people as his students: Go Seigen and thirty years later Chen Zude.
[1] The versions of the article before 2021 gave his birth year as 1891, a statement made by Charles Matthews on the article's creation in 2002. As Charles didn't cite a source, and 1892 is agreed on by the Perfect Weiqi Database and the Chinese Wikipedia, the year has been changed.
