Game Recorder

Japanese: 記録係 (kiroku-gakari)
Korean: -

The game recorder or scorekeeper is the person responsible for keeping the written game record, keeping track of thinking time consumed and counting seconds in byoyomi time. In the case of games between professionals, this duty will often be performed by insei or low-ranking professionals. This job is usually only assigned to a separate person in major events, such as those described under Japanese Timing / Big Title.

The game recorder used to be consulted by the players, as happened in the famous incident in 1980 when game four of the 5th Meijin tournament was ruled void after an illegal recapture of a ko after consulting the scorekeeper, Hikosaka Naoto. This incident caused a rule change; now the rules explicitly provide that the scorekeeper has no responsibility on what happens on the board. In addition, title match games are now accompanied by two scorekeepers.

Automatic Game Recorder

In April 2022, the Nihon Kiin introduced a full automatic game recording system named "KIFU361" for all of its official games. A camera on the ceiling and an AI software automatically recognize the position and record the moves in digital format. Before the introduction of the system, only about 60% of professional games were recorded.
