Tournament Description

I am making a new tournament on Dragon go server. Please note that this is not page of official Dragon Tourney in 2010, but of my tournament. We will use Japanese rules, all games even (nigiri) with komi of 6,5 points for white. Each player will have 40 days thinking time without any byoyomi. The tournament will start when there will be 32 players. They will be randomly divided to four groups of eight players. When the tournament starts, everyone will start playing everybody else in their group. After all games are over, top two from each group will form a top group, 3. and 4. will form the second group, 5. and 6. will form the third group and 7. and 8. will form the 4. group and than everyone will play everyone else once again. We do not have any prizes for the first tournament. The games will be played on Dragon Go Server. All results will be posted here.

1st Round Groups and Results

In the following tables the results can be reported. Please note that for every game the result has to be maintained into two table cells, once for the win of player 1, one for the loss of player 2. Players are ranked ("Rk" Column) by total number of wins ("W" Column). If two players have the same number of wins they are ranked according to the number of losses ("L" Column).

Zengarden How does one join the tournament?

LovroF You simply write your name and surname here, your DGS nick in brackets and your DGS rank.

Also when the tournament starts, from what I read above, the intention is that each player will effectively be playing 8 games at the same time to start with. Also there will be only 40 days to play these 8 games. Can you confirm that my understanding is correct?

It is correct. (I would clarify to say that each player has 40 days to finish their games. Theoretically the games could take 80 days but practically speaking it will be something less - Dan Miller)

DrStraw: If there are only 8 in a group who is the 8th opponent? As far as I can see it is only 7 games at a time.

Zengarden Sorry, I am going to have to "wimp out" of the tournament. Playing eight games would simultaneously would be a large commitment of time and I won't be able to devote 1 hour a day or so to the tournament. Have fun nevertheless!

sh: If you spend half a minute on each move (which is around tournament speed), and you have four moves per day on eight matches, it's only about a quarter of an hour to spend each day.

Zengarden I think 30 seconds per move would be extremely fast, likely to lead to gross blunders. I have only played a couple of games on the DGS and I find I spend at least 10 minutes per move, particularly when the situation gets complicated. With 8 games simultaneoulsy, I would be very surprised if one could play decently without spending about an hour per day on the 8 games. Hence my decision to withdraw (reluctantly!)

jpduke? This discussion does rather assume that your opponent is there at the same time as you, whenever you wish to play your moves.. This will almost certainly not happen for everybody, wot with different time zones/ work schedules etc etc..So, without sitting at your computer 24/7 just in case, it is going to be hard to play many moves each day unless you are lucky..(?)

sh: What happens to the rest of the group if someone has been kicked out of the tournament?

LovroF: We have some backup players... If there are none, everyone in group gets one point for the kicked out one.

antone?: if two players in the same group already have a game in progress, is it acceptable to use that game as a tournament game ? (if both players agree of course)

LovroF : You must start a new game!

topazg: I've gone and made a number of cosmetic changes, because I was finding a) scrolling up and down to compare people to the group confusing, and was finding the edit displaying 4 tables at once really messy. If people really don't like it please revert, but I figured this would be easier to see and to edit :)

Rustaman?: I played all my games. What should I do?

topazg: Wait until all the games in the round have finished, then the second round can start...

Sbodd?: Since I think ours is the last game running, I've "resigned" from my game with Bruce Young/BaghwanB (the game is still active as I'd like to play it out, but I'm not going to win). I also posted the same in the DGS forum thread.

Rustaman?: Ross Werner(ross) and Kirk McElhearn(kirkmc) not playing?
