Brian Castledine was one of the UK's top Go players in the 1970s. He challenged for the title in 1978, at which point he was playing at his highest rank of 3dan. He joined the BGA Council in 1976 and went on to become President of the Association. However, on the 28th of February, 1979, he died in a tragic accident, falling from a cliff whilst walking. He worked as a lecturer in Statistics at Sussex University.

On his death a trust fund was set up in his name to help young Go players in the UK. It is now called the [ext] Castledine Barnes trust
