Charles In reply to the marked black stone, what happens if White accepts the ponnuki? Black will cut White off with one more play, in an outright attempt to kill White. That would seem to make the game very difficult.

Possible continuation  

For example White plays 3 after Black 2. White has possibilities at a, b and c, and can play 5 to open up a front on the lower side.
