On immediate life you ask:

Bildstein What does it mean for White to be alive. Does it mean that Black can not threaten to kill? Or that White can not be forced to run towards the center? Or similarly that greater influence from the center would not threaten White?

It means that white cannot be killed unless Black plays first and gets two moves in a row (eg, in a ko fight). If white responds correctly, no attack of black's can kill the white group.
